Not Feeling the Tool (the Puppet Tool for After Effects CS3)

October 26, 2007

Boy, was I ever looking forward to trying out the new “puppet tool” for AE CS3. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I did think it would be something great. Adobe was advertising the heck out of this new tool for animation. The basic idea of it is that warp parts of a 2D image. If there’s an alpha channel on it, then it would pretend it doesn’t exist at all and warp only the visible areas. Really, really cool. The only problem of it is that it’s not that much different than using mesh warping. I’m certainly going to look into the tool some more, but as far as I’m concerned at the moment, animating a figure is like animating a Gumby toy. I can see it being good for animating cloth and stuff, but I definitely wouldn’t use it to animate a full on character (which was what my impression of it was, based on the information on the Adobe website). I’m pretty sure I’ll find a way to use it to its full potential, but right now I’m not digging it.
